About the Course
This course has been specifically designed for peer support members and teams to learn the basic and advanced helping skills to facilitate effective peer support. Peer supporters join their teams to help peers and potentially save lives. Unfortunately, the basic training that many members get does not teach the HOW of the peer support process. This course will start by teaching basic helping skills like how to start conversations, asking good questions, and building insight and motivation in peers. The later sections of the course discuss the more commonly faced issues, such as depression, anxiety, and marriage and family concerns, along with the complex topics such as suicidality, PTSD, and loss of team members. Skill development through discussion and modeling increases skills and confidence, making more effective and resilient peer support members.
What's Included
Each “Day” course will include 5-6 videos of Dr. Vaughn, and guest speakers who are specialists as peer support members or mental health professionals, presenting on critical skills for peer support members. You will be able to hear multiple perspectives on issues, and options for handling them, while following the training curriculum. In many cases, we will model how you could have these conversations.
